A new paper map was released in March 2023.

Avalanche Slope Ruler TM

The Avalanche Slope RulerTM lets you measure the slope, in degrees, based on the contour lines on any 1:24,000 map. It's perfect for the Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map or any map with 1:24,000 scaling, such as USGS topographic maps. And it compliments the Avalanche Inclinometer.

To measure a slope, hold the ruler perpendicular to the contour lines on a map and find the slope where the lines on the ruler have approximately the same spacing as the contour lines on the map. As you can see in this photo, the slope in the lower portion of "Short Swing" is approximately 30 degrees.

The Avalanche Slope Ruler has 14 different slope scales. Eight of the scales target the avalanche prone zones between 30° to 45°.

The back of the Avalanche Slope Ruler measures distances in both feet and miles.

The Avalanche Slope ruler is approximately 6x1". It is made of flexible plastic that is unlikely to break when traveling with you in the backcountry.
