iOS Troubleshooting

This page deals contains troubleshooting tips for the Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map and Avalanche Inclinometer apps.

Enabling the GPS

The Wasatch Backcountry Skiing App requires that your iOS device's GPS is enabled:

  1. Tap the Settings icon on your iOS device.
  2. Tap the Privacy icon in Settings.
  3. Tap the Location Services icon.
  4. Make sure Location Services are turned on near the top of the screen.
  5. Scroll down the list of installed apps to "WBSkiing" (or "Avy Inclinometer") and make sure it is set to "While Using the App" and that "Precise Location" is selected.

Troubleshooting the Compass

I have had a few reports of the compass not working on the iOS apps. Here are some suggestions to resolve this.

  • Make sure Location Services are enabled as described above.
  • Do a forced restart of your ios device.
  • Make sure your device isn't next to a magnet (e.g., a MagSafe charger).
  • Shake your phone. Yeah, I'm serious. I had a customer who did this and it fixed the problem.
  • See if Apple's built-in compass works.

If you have problems with your compass in one of my apps, please contact me and let me know if the above steps solved, or didn't solve, the problem.

Troubleshooting the Inclinometer's Speech

If the Inclinometer isn't saying the slope angle out loud:

  • Choose Settings at the bottom of the Inclinometer app and make sure the Enable Speech option is enabled.
  • Make sure the mute switch on the side of your device is not set to Silent.
  • Press the Volume Up button on the side of your device to ensure the volume is set to its maximum.
